Overview of Ball Screw

Ball screws are specialized mechanical linear actuators built with a screw shaft and a nut that encapsulates a rolling ball. This ball traverses along their aligned helical grooves. The main role of ball screws is to transform rotational motion into linear motion effectively. Ball nuts enable force transmission to either a stationary or a moving load with high levels of accuracy, precision, and consistency.

Advantages of ball screw

Highly Efficient

Ball screws are more efficient than other types of screws, boasting 90% efficiency in comparison to a lead screw's 20-80%. This means that ball screws are able to convert more of their rotary motion to linear motion more quickly than other types of screws.

Lessen Friction

The ball bearings of a ball screw serve to reduce friction as the nut moves along the shaft of the screw. This results in less wear to the device in addition to a longer lifespan.

Accurate

Ball screws are also known for their accuracy. If a machine requires a screw with a high amount of accuracy, a ball screw is the way to go. Depending on whether you choose a ground or rolled ball screw, the exact level of precision can vary from device to device.

Cost-Effective

Ball screws are often used as an alternative to hydraulic or pneumatic systems since they use less external power. This, combined with their long lifespans, makes ball screws a cost-effective option.

Craftsmanship of Ball Screw

Ball screw shafts may be fabricated by rolling, yielding a less precise but inexpensive and mechanically efficient product. Rolled ball screws have a positional precision of several thousandths of an inch per foot.

Ball screw are classified using "accuracy grades" from C0 (most precise) to C10. High-precision screw shafts are typically precise to one thousandth of an inch per foot (830 nanometers per centimeter) or better. They have historically been machined to gross shape, case-hardened, and then ground. The three-step process is needed because high-temperature machining distorts the workpiece.

Hard whirling is a recent (2008) precision machining technique that minimizes heating of the work, and can produce precision screws from case-hardened bar stock. Instrument-quality screw shafts are typically precise to 250 nanometers per centimeter. They are produced on precision milling machines with optical distance measuring equipment and special tooling. Similar machines are used to produce optical lenses and mirrors. Instrument screw shafts are generally made of Invar, to prevent temperature from changing tolerances too much.

Precautions for use of Ball Screw

Before installation, store ball screws in their original package (on a flat surface) and in a clean environment to prevent potential entry of contaminants. Ball screws should come installed with lubricant, but confirm they are properly lubricated before use. Insufficient lubrication can lead to premature failure. Don't apply any other lubrication then what was originally applied to the ball screw. The mixing of different greases is not recommended. If there is contamination or dirt, wipe the surface down with clean white kerosene and immediately reapply the same grease type.

Warning: During use, avoid overrunning the ball nut, as this can damage recirculation components. Remember that the maximum operating temperature for typical ball screws is 80° C. Consult the manufacturer if an environment will be subject to hotter temperatures or necessitate special lubrication. In addition to these suggestions, check grease every two to three months of operation and replenish as needed. One final tip: Never attempt to disassemble a ball screw. If needed, send it to the manufacturer for repair or reassembly.

FAQ

Q: What is the use of ball screw and lead screw?

A: Ball screws excel in applications where efficiency, precision and high-speed, smooth motion are preferred. Lead screws can be a suitable solution for simple applications where smooth or quiet motion is of more value than rigidity, precision, accuracy, and speed.

Q: What are the application of ball screws?

A: Ball screws are used in aircraft and missiles to move control surfaces, especially for electric fly by wire, and in automobile power steering to translate rotary motion from an electric motor to axial motion of the steering rack. They are also used in machine tools, robots, and precision assembly equipment.

Q: How much weight can a ball screw hold?

A: A ball screw drive translates rotational motion to linear motion or vice versa and can apply or withstand high thrust loads - upward of 750,000 lbs static capacity using a Ø6. 000” ball screw assembly - with efficiency typically greater than 90%.

Q: Does a ball screw have two circuits?

A: But because they use dual-start threads, offset is between the two threads. Each thread of the nut forms a closed ball circuit, so there are two two-point-contact circuits running at opposite sides of their respective shaft ball tracks.

Q: Are you a factory or a trading company ?

A: We are a factory and trading company at the same time.

Q: How about the quality of the products ?

A: Our products are of high quality and we have registered and reputable brands.

Q: What's the MOQ for each items ?

A: 100 pieces.

Q: What's our shipping ways ?

A: We can provide different types of shipping such as sea, air, and land.

Q: What is your terms of packing?

A: Generally, we pack our goods in neutral white boxes and cartons. If you have legally registered patent, we can pack the goods in your branded boxes after getting your authorization letters.
